Born Joan Patricia Markey on August 31, 1936 in Denver, she was the daughter of James Markey and Patricia Moore Markey. She grew up in Wichita Falls where she attended the Academy of Mary Immaculate and was educated by the SSMN.
After answering the call to the SSMN in 1955, she served as a beloved educator, administrator, teacher, development director, colleague and friend of many – from grade schools in Texas to Universities in Tulsa and Houston, to Fort Worth Nolan Catholic High School where her former students expressed their appreciation throughout the years. Sr. Joan was gifted with a great love and knowledge of Literature. She not only shared that gift in the classroom but she could at any moment recite poetry and other pieces of literature by memory. Her last and most wonderful outing was to attend the 50 year reunion of the NCHS class of 1975 this Spring.
Sr. Joan served her community in leadership several times in the Western Region of the SSMN. She was known for so much – her gracious sense of welcome, her sense of humor and sense of others. She was proud of her Irish Heritage, a compass which guided her and was continually expressed in her smiling presence and acceptance of life and others.
Sr. Joan will be greatly missed by many – her brothers Jim and Edward, nieces, nephews, numerous friends and her community of Sisters at OLV and beyond. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Polly.
Memorials may be sent to the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur, 909 W. Shaw St., Fort Worth, Texas 76110.
