Mary Margaret Chokas

Mary Margaret Psimaris Chokas, beloved mother, grandmother, and devoted matriarch, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2026, at the age of 90.

Born on October 28, 1935, in Schenectady, New York, to Greek immigrant parents from Smyrna, Margaret carried a deep pride in her heritage and a spirited sense of independence throughout her life.

After graduating from Memorial College of Nursing in Albany, New York, she traveled to Texas, where she met her husband, Mitchell James Chokas. In true Greek fashion, they became engaged just eight days later and were married within four months, beginning a life together that would take them across Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and beyond.

Margaret began her career as a registered nurse specializing in labor and delivery at Hendrick Memorial Hospital in Abilene, Texas, where she helped bring countless lives into the world. She later continued her work at the Edna Gladney Home for unwed mothers and adoption services in Fort Worth. While raising her three children—Mitchell James Chokas Jr., Barbara Chokas, and Christina Chokas—she also pursued advanced training as a nurse anesthetist.

In Colorado, Margaret embraced a new chapter, stepping into the world of fashion as one of Denver’s first plus-size models. Her natural elegance and charisma led her to become Special Events and Promotions Director for a group of department stores across Colorado and Wyoming. In this role, she organized major fashion and charity events, attended New York Fashion Week, and moved with ease among designers, public figures, and cultural leaders. Among her many memorable experiences were having cocktails at Estée Lauder’s apartment, chairing the women’s section of an international petroleum convention in Las Vegas, and attending the Carousel Ball alongside the cast of Dynasty.

Following her husband’s retirement and subsequent illness, Margaret returned to Texas, settling in Bedford, where she devoted herself fully to her family. She became a cornerstone of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, serving her community with deep faith and dedication. She was an active member of Philoptochos, served multiple terms as president of the parish council, and played a central role in the church’s food festival and community life. She also found great joy in the senior ministry, the “Ageless Wonders,” forming lasting friendships and continuing her vibrant social spirit.

Margaret is survived by her children, Mitchell James Chokas Jr. and his wife Maretta Chokas, Barbara Chokas, and Christina Chokas; and by her cherished grandchildren, Mitchell James Chokas III, Mallory Bell and her husband Jeremy Bell, and Madison Chokas.

She will be remembered for her strength, her elegance, her devotion to family and faith, and the remarkable life she lived across many chapters and places.
