Kenneth McClellan Scagel III, better known as Kenny, passed away far too soon on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at the age of 52, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on August 21, 1972, in Lowell, Massachusetts, Kenny was the youngest child and only boy, which meant he was doted on by his three older sisters: Susan, Elizabeth, and Elsa. Growing up Kenny attended The Eaglebrook School and then The Middlesex School and developed a lifelong love affair with football—playing it, coaching it, watching it, and above all, cheering on his beloved New England Patriots.
In the mid 90’s Kenny headed south to Texas where he earned a Liberal Arts degree with a concentration in Philosophy from the College of St. Thomas More. More importantly, it was there he met the love of his life, Elizabeth Jarvis. Kenny and Elizabeth were united in the sacrament of holy matrimony on August 1st, 1998 at St. Mary the Assumption Catholic Church in Fort Worth, Texas. Together they raised their seven children: Kenneth IV (26), Augustine (24), Claire (21), Wyatt (18), Deacon (16), Major (14), and Bowie (12).
Kenny was fortunate enough to find his true calling: teaching. He began at The Lady Margaret Roper School under his mentor Mr. Harry Lacey, later joining Cassata Catholic High School in Fort Worth, where he often said it was “the best job he ever had.” Kenny taught History, Theology, Literature, and Latin, and in 2023 was selected as one of Fort Worth Magazine’s Top Teachers. Kenny was a gifted and passionate teacher. He would say, “You have to love what you are teaching, and you have to love the kids, because they can tell.” He was amazing with kids that other teachers had given up on. It was his determination to see them grow in character and in life that made the difference. Throughout his 20 years of teaching, he referred to his students as his “kids,” and when they got married and had children of their own, he would often say he loved hearing about his “grand-students.”
Kenny was a devoted husband, a loving father, a cherished brother, and a loyal friend. Though we mourn his loss, his legacy and love live on through his family, his children and the students he taught.
Kenny is proceeded in death by his father, Kenneth McClellan Scagel Jr., and his mother, Elizabeth Anne (Root) Scagel.
Kenny is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; their children Kenneth McClellan Scagel IV, Augustine Graham Scagel, Claire Susannah Scagel, Wyatt Charles Scagel, Deacon Paul Scagel, Major Childs Scagel, Bowie James Scagel; his sisters Susan Young (Marshall Young), Elizabeth Whitman, and Elsa Bottomley (Ian Bottomley). He will be missed by his many nieces and nephews and countless students who will forever carry a bit of his wisdom and warmth.
