Julia Mary Schwind Vecera, beloved wife, mother, and faithful servant, passed away on Friday, March 6, 2026, in Fort Worth, Texas, surrounded by her children and family. She was ninety-three years old.
Julia was born on December 25, 1932, to Joseph Francis and Mary Rose Schwind in Breckenridge, Texas. As one of nine children living through the Great Depression and World War II, she learned to ration, recycle, and pray unceasingly – practices that she carried throughout her life.
Julia’s resume reveals a lifelong commitment to service. After earning her degree as a Registered Nurse from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing, she worked in the obstetrics department at St. Joseph and later in pediatrics at Cook Children’s Hospital. When her children were grown, Julia worked as a secretary at St. Bartholomew and St. Paul Catholic Churches. Her last position was as a volunteer at Mother and Unborn Baby Care where her empathy for young mothers and her steadfast support of the unborn flourished.
Of all her vocations, Julia’s roles as wife and mother brought her the greatest joy. Married to Jim for sixty-two years, the two laughed and danced and worked hard to provide a loving home with traditions and strong values for their family. The couple traveled to every state as well as countries throughout Europe taking in the history, culture, landscapes, and architecture of their destinations; however, Julia’s favorite family vacation spot was in the mountains of Colorado where she felt closer to God. In retirement, they volunteered at church, delivered food to those in need, and contributed generously to the poor. Throughout their lives, Jim and Julia were ardent supporters of the parishes and schools in the Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth.
Blessed with five daughters and two sons, Julia considered it her primary mission to raise them in stewardship and faith. She worked alongside her children picking blackberries, cleaning house, sewing, and painting to instill the virtues of diligence, cooperation, service, and gratitude. Julia’s love lived in the details of daily life: a warm loaf of bread, a jar of handcrafted pickles, a rescued houseplant, and a family that thrived under her care.
Her faith was the compass for every aspect of Julia’s existence. She taught her children to pray daily. She strove to live virtuously, rooted in the conviction that every human being deserves dignity—a lesson she instilled in her children and embodied with humility until her final breath. This is the enduring legacy she leaves behind.
Julia is survived by her children, Anne Fernandez and husband, Fred; Jimmy Vecera, Jr. and wife, Julie; Nancy Alonso and husband, Mike; Joseph Vecera and wife, Lynnette; Teresa Finn and husband, Tom; Mary Burns and husband, Lonnie; and Jeanne Murphy and husband, John; her grandchildren, Shawn Fernandez and Sara Ramadan, Walter and Chelsea Fernandez, Richard and Crystal Fernandez, Daniel and Kristin Fernandez, David Fernandez, Maria Fernandez; Andrew and Meghan Vecera, Anthony and Carolyn Vecera; Michael and Emmanuelle Alonso, Nicholas and Marissa Alonso, Madeleine and Derek Stanzel; Lauren and Laramie LaRue, Elizabeth and Bryson North; Richelle and Travis King, Jacqueline Finn, Tara Finn, Jenna Finn; Lonnie and Rachael Burns, Hannah and Payton Coil, Ian Burns; Emily Murphy, Julia Murphy, William Murphy, Margaret Murphy, and Katherine Murphy; her great-grandchildren, Hendrix and Arthur Fernandez; Emmanuel and Jordan Fernandez; Alexander and Abigail Vecera; Aaron and Monica Vecera; Michael Thomas, Cecilia, Rose and Eli Alonso; Noah Alonso; Samuel and Judith Stanzel; Johnathen and Remington LaRue; Violet North; Jacob, James, Henry and Isaac King; Dylan, Carmella, and Nathan Burns; her siblings, Catherine Meyer, Francis Schwind, Patricia Rose, and Marian Stillman; and scores of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends who will miss her dearly.
