Maudie was born in Witcher, Oklahoma, to Alexander and Bernice Lushbough, one of four children. In 1949, she married Thomas Navarro Ortez and moved to Texas, where she poured her heart into raising her five children and building a home filled with unconditional love.
Maudie loved without hesitation and welcomed all into her home. She was an avid bowler in two leagues, playing well into her eighties. She loved hunting and fishing with her family and whenever possible, wanted to be by Long Creek in her cabin.
She is preceded in passing by her parents; her siblings Norton “Sunny” Lushbough, Earnest Emerson Lushbough, Loretta Mae Lushbough Taylor; her husbands, Thomas N. Ortez and James Donald “J.D.” Vickers; and four of her children: Tommy Dean Ortez, Johnny Navarro Ortez, Ronny Mac Ortez, and Beverly Ann Ortez Mitchell, who welcomed her home.
Maudie leaves behind a family who adored her deeply: her daughter, Vicki, and son-in-law, Richard Mitchell; her grandchildren, Sonja Ortez, Johnny Jr. Ortez, Blossom Ortez, Thomas Ortez III, Bryan Mitchell, Brad Mitchell, Jaclyn Taylor, and Allison Taylor Maxcey; along with twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren who will carry her memory forward with pride and affection.
Maudie was the backbone of the family and was unwavering in her love and support. She was resilient and lived through unimaginable situations with steadfastness and deep-seated faith. Her favorite way to tell you that she loved you was a “bushel, and a peck, and a hug around the neck.” She was a remarkable woman whose determination and unbreakable spirit will be remembered for generations.
