Life Legacy

Mary Dorothy Skiba Szatkowski, our mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, died peacefully on Monday, May 28, 2012.

Her family will greet friends beginning at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2012, at Thompson's Harveson and Cole Funeral Home where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, June 1, 2012, at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 3717 Stadium Drive, Fort Worth followed by burial in Greenwood Memorial Park.

Mary was born at home on June 29, 1920 in Holyoke, Mass. to Franciszek (Frank) and Anna Wilk Skiba. She graduated from Holy Rosary High School in Holyoke, Mass. She passed up a full college scholarship to take factory work to help her family recover from the Great Depression.

Primarily a homemaker, Mary took many part time jobs to help stretch the household budget. She was a temporary worker in retail sales for many Christmas seasons and a telephone operator. She fulfilled her lifelong interest in the medical field by working as a unit clerk in a large regional trauma center where she also served as a Polish-English translator and emergency blood donor. Mary's favorite work was childcare and she helped many families throughout the years. She was skilled in needlework and mastered the art of making braided rugs.

Mary's lifelong desire to care for others guided her to one very special volunteer effort. When hospice care debuted in the early 1970's, Mary became a trained hospice volunteer. Somewhere in public television's archives is a videotaped program in which Mary, a hospice panel member, helped explain the value of hospice care to the viewing public.

Mary was the last of her generation in our family. She leaves us with peace in her heart, joy, and the anticipation of meeting God and reuniting with her beloved husband, Daniel, and her family and friends. Her lifelong selfless goal of caring for others was met with courage and grace. She will be rewarded. We will miss her.

We give special thanks to the staff of Hurst Plaza Nursing and Rehab Center for their kind, caring, and consistently excellent care of Mom in her final years.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Daniel J. Szatkowski, Sr.; brothers, Joseph, Adolph, Sebastian, and Max Skiba; sister, Evelyn Skiba Metroske; son-in-law, Roy H. Carlson; and her beloved first grandchild, Carolynn Szatkowski. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Szatkowski Carlson; son and daughter-in-law, Daniel J. and Jennifer Hoye Szatkowski; son, John D. Szatkowski; grandson and wife, David J. and Becky Chaffin Szatkowski; great grandchildren, Jordan and Sean Szatkowski; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Please celebrate Mary's life by offering a memorial donation to a church or food bank of your choice or providing a random act of kindness for someone.
